Virtually everybody knows that one of the fastest, surest ways of winning the big prize (i.e. actually making money) on the internet super-speedway is to start your own business and “go big or go home.”

Of course, that’s a lot easier said than done, which is why so many people end up hawking second-hand stuff on Ebay, becoming a digital serf on sites like Fiverr, or selling your soul for the pennies available on Pay Per Click sites.

Frankly, most of these kinds of gigs are just a way of trading time for dollars – and usually for a lot less than what a J-O-B is going to pay. Still, there’s nothing wrong with those methods, either. To each his own. It’s just that you’re never going to win the Grand Prix of internet marketing in those realms. You’ll be extremely lucky to be an “also ran.”

If you are going to start an online business, most folks will tell you that the best way to go is with affiliate marketing. People want to make “real money,” online – not just gas money – and that’s perfectly understandable. And reasonable. After all, you can. In theory – it’s easy. You can sell somebody else’s product and get a cut. Sell a lot of other people’s products and you can make a fortune!

As the “standard” commission rate in the field (especially for digital products like ebooks, PDFs, video courses, etc) is 50-75%, there’s good money to be made. You don’t even absolutely need to have your own website, which is a big roadblock for most beginners.

You can run a race, see if you like it, and only then decide whether you think it’s worth the stretch to keep going, and invest more time – and money. Because even if you’re doing things “for free,” there isn’t any such thing. Your time is worth something, and even if you’re not counting it, failure means lost opportunity. It may be educational – which is actually worth something – but it’s not as good as having the money. Wouldn’t you rather get paid?
